On April 22nd, we will celebrate Earth Day. What does that mean in wine talk?
Many winemakers and wineries are working hard to preserve the earth and deliver biodynamic and sustainable wines to market. This month I am highlighting a few that are making great strides towards delivering tip top ratings while doing good.
Biodynamic in winemaking means it is made using a holistic, ecological farming approach that treats the vineyard as a self-sustaining, living organism. Based on Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy, it goes beyond organic farming by using special herbal/mineral preparations and following a lunar calendar for planting and harvesting, while prohibiting synthetic chemicals. Sustainable winemaking is a holistic approach to producing wine that balances environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic viability. It focuses on maintaining healthy soil and biodiversity, reducing water and energy use, and implementing sustainable packaging, while ensuring fair labor practices and long-term business health.
