Cinco de Mayo (May 5)
Commemorates Mexican Heritage
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It is primarily a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, particularly in the U.S..
Historians note that the victory prevented France from aiding the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War, potentially altering U.S. history.
The holiday gained popularity in the 1960s and 70s via the Chicano movement and has been celebrated since 1863 as a form of resistance and cultural solidarity.
Mexican Americans have been the backbone of the U.S. wine industry for over a century, evolving from a primary labor force to influential winery owners and award-winning winemakers.
Leveraging their intimate knowledge of grape cultivation, many Mexican Americans transitioned from laborers to master viticulturists and vineyard managers, overseeing hundreds of acres for prestigious estates.
